SRINAGAR, India (Islamweb & News Agencies) - A Resistance squad of a nationalist Kashmiri group attacked an Indian army camp in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, killing at least two soldiers, police and the militant group said.
Three Resistance men from the Lashkar-e-Taiba group died in the gunbattle that followed the attack in Bagatpora in Kupwara district, a police statement said. A Lashkar spokesman, however, told a Western news agency it had killed six Indian soldiers.
The attack was the latest in a series of Resistance assaults this year on the army which is battling to quell a separatist revolt in Muslim-majority Indian-ruled Kashmir.
Tensions between India and Pakistan have risen in recent weeks over the dispute in Kashmir despite the two countries lining up behind the United States in its military campaign against Islamic militants in neighbouring Afghanistan.
India says Pakistan has continued to help fighters in Muslim-majority Kashmir despite joining the global fight against terrorism. Islamabad says it only gives moral support to the Kashmiri "freedom fighters".
